CTV Morning Live : Valentine's Date Night Makeup

Ahhh, love is in the air! It's that time of year where we dust off our finest clothes and head out for a lovely romantic dinner. But what about if you're just heading to a pub and a movie, or a first date at a coffee shop? The makeup you choose to wear should compliment where you are going - if you're heading to Starbucks, you may want to hold off on the glitter (unless, ya really love glitter!). This morning on CTV Morning Live, we discussed the when's and why's of the makeup I chose for three date night looks!

Here is the video : Valentine's Date Night Looks

First model, my lovely Jen - she's on her way to a coffee shop. Cozy, casual and comfortable, but bright lights, so we kept the focus on skin! Especially in the winter months, we need to make sure we pay particular attention to our skin, and feed it full of all the yummy things. For Jen's luminous skin, I used The Body Shop's Fresh Nude Foundation for that radiant glow, and some of the Shade Adjusting Lightening drops to lighten where I needed, as well as to highlight a bit. Next we used Stila Convertible Colour on the cheeks and lips! (note: for the cheeks, use a fluffy blush brush for a super glowy, diffused look).

For Marla, she's going to dinner and a movie! We gave her a slightly smokier eye using our trusty Urban Decay Naked2 palette, and perfected her skin with Fresh Nude Foundation listed above. Kept the cheeks soft and used Meredesso's Lip Treats in Sheer Burgundy for lightweight, buildable colour. Lots of yummy ingredients in this one with sunflower seed oil, grape seed oil and Vitamins C & E. It also doubles as a fantastic primer for matte lipsticks, as there isn't too much slip to it.

For myself (, a model? Not really), I went all out with glitz and glamour! What can I say... it's kinda my style :) Smokey, sultry eye that I topped off with Stila's Magnificent Metals in Kitten, just stamped over my lid to give a twinkly effect. I'm wearing Ardell Demi Wispies (a huge fave of mine!), and MAC Retro Matte lipstick in Flat Out Fabulous. Under the lipstick (which believe me, has pretty incredible wear on it's own), I paired it up with The Body Shop's Lip & Cheek Stain. That way, once my lip colour wears down, I still have something behind it to back it up a bit.

CTV Morning Live : Travel Beauty Essentials

Ahhh, who doesn't love a nice trip away?? With weight restrictions and checked luggage charges, it's best to keep the beauty regime low-key by not bringing a ton of products (and it'll leave you extra space for all the shoes!). This morning on CTV Morning Live, Melissa Lamb and I were talking about travel beauty essentials, and looked at some pretty cool products - check them out!

Watch the video here!

And in order, here are the fabulous products we discussed:

With Pureology's Ant-Fade Complex, you can be sure it's actually doing good things for your colour and/or highlights, as well. See it as a little TLC for your tresses that may be a little stressed from all that sand and sun ;)

This seriously makes it so easy to be razor-free during your travels with a few quick treatments at home before you go! With as little as one treatment every two weeks, you can be virtually hair-free in about 3 months (results vary), using the same diode that you would be treated with at a dermatologists' office for a fraction of the price. CTV Morning Live - Anti-Aging Devices

When asked about some of the industry's most truly innovative anti-aging devices, I just knew I needed to share this information with my fan base and beyond. This is a very common concern for many people, not just women, and it certainly doesn't imply vanity. This morning, I was on CTV Morning Live with Melissa, talking about a couple of great devices available on the market right now. So, if you're dealing with hyperpigmentation or fine lines and wrinkles, I may have the products for you!

Watch the video - CTV Morning Live - Anti-Aging Devices

First up - Clarisonic Sonic Radiance Solution!

Now for a statistic, I found this intriguing. The #1 concern when it comes to aging, or rather anti-aging, is hyper pigmentation - and this is true across the board no matter of gender or race. We all know hyperpigmentation is when we see darkening patches on the skin, whether we call them age spots, sun spots, freckling... all the same thing. Hyper pigmentation happens as a result of injury (who knew) and this injury can be caused by many things like environment, acne, stress, and sun exposure to name a few. Essentially your skin produces extra melanin (which is the pigment that gives our skin the colour it is) in it's repairing process. These spots can be hard to cover, and well frankly, most people just want them gone!

Clarisonic saw a huge need for this in the marketplace, and for the first time ever, have created an entire system dedicated to reducing the appearance of current spots, and helping to prevent new ones. Immediate results are seen when using their specifically designed Sonic Radiance skin care, and it just keeps getting better from there!

  • 37% clinical improvement of skin texture
  • 2.5x greater skin clarity & improved radiance VS. manual treatment

And the most impressive stat yet...

  • 10x greater improvement of hyper pigmentation VS. manual treatment after two weeks

What?! 10 times?? That is HUGE! It's important to know that these studies are very closely tracked and documented - a lot of work goes into a getting a clinical trial and to be able to make a claim on a product. So these results say A LOT. And they are based on using the same skin care either with, or without, the device. So while the skin care is great, the device is what makes it oh-so-special!

Now onto the products themselves:

Clarisonic Aria - offers customizable, three speed sonic cleansing. What's also important to know, is that while the device itself is an existing model, the brush head itself is the softest, most gentlest brush in their entire line up. To purchase this Sonic Radiance brush head separately to go on your current Clarisonic device, click here.

Skin Illuminating Cleanser - this is going to be your morning cleanser, as it will leave your skin bright and radiant - a lovely way to start the day! You'll use Speed 1 with this cleanser.

Skin Renewing Peel Wash - this will be your evening cleanser and this is where the exfoliation magic happens. Combining two key ingredients of 0.2% LHA and 3.5% Glycolic Acid, will help to improve texture, boost moisture and fade those pesky age spots! You'll use Speed 3 at nighttime only with this cleanser.

Brightening Activating Serum - this will be used both day and night to help lighten dark spots and help to prevent new ones from forming.

So all in all - this is a huge win for the skincare and anti-aging market. Nothing I love more than some really fantastic products I can use in the comfort of my own home. The Clarisonic Sonic Radiance Solution set is available for $265 CAD at If you already have and love a Clarisonic device, you can simply purchase the skin care and brush head, for $132 here.

Which brings me to the Tria Age-Defying Laser (ADL)! I almost can hear the heavenly angels sing when I type those words.

Admittedly nervous when I first tried it, apprehension set in... Was I actually going to use a laser on my face, and if so, how much was it going to hurt?? Well, I did... and so happy I did!

The ADL is a super exciting device in the marketplace - I mean, we are talking about taking an experience that used to only be found in dermatologists and plastic surgeons offices for a) loads of money and b) a bunch of downtime, that involves a sunburned appearance and flaking skin.

Well folks, the Tria ADL has neither! A reasonable price point and no virtually downtime - SIGN ME UP!

I initially didn't want to bore you with statistics, but I am a stats girl - anyone can say their product is 'great', but if you have the numbers to prove it, I'm all ears! This info is taken directly from the Tria website:

  • 83% of people feel the ADL leaves their skin better looking than any other product
  • 88% of users report smoother skin texture
  • 77% report a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles (including around the eye area)
  • 77% of users agree that the ADL is as effective as professional laser treatments
  • 80% of users reported a reduction in discolouration

This page here describes really well how the ADL works, and why (and the informative graphic really helps too :) )

How does it feel? Well... I ain't gonna lie. It doesn't hurt, but you definitely feel it. Perhaps could be described as a zillion tiny little elastic bands snapping across your skin? Yes, that sounds accurate. But while it offers very mild discomfort and a tinge of redness, you know it's working. It's at bedtime anyways, and totally gone by morning - don't forget to sunscreen it up come day time, though!

How does it work? To make the explanation easy, is to say this: it is a fractional laser that uses light beams to create microscopic cellular disruptions deep within the skin (not epidermis... we are talking dermis here). What this does, is it tells your skin to go into a normal healing process, which stimulation collagen production and to rapidly repair those treated areas. As this happens, the new collagen creates a smoother texture on your skin's surface, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and discolouration is discarded through the skin's natural exfoliation process.

What I like about the ADL, is that it is easy to use. Once you read through the manual, you quickly discover that it's pretty fool-proof as well. Starting with freshly cleansed and dried skin, the little light tells you that you're using it properly, and it turns off if you're not. It also has a Canada Medical Device License (I don't think I'd be using a laser that didn't, but this is still very reassuring to know).

The products that are available for purchase really do compliment the device so well - they are designed for and meant to work together.

Anti-Aging Facial Serum - $75; soothes and hydrates treated skin; contains retinol; skin sees improvement in elasticity and firmness while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Super C Brightening Moisturizer - $69; delivers up to 4x more brightening ingredients following laser treatment; Vitamin C has been long known for its anti-oxidant properties and will help to brighten skin

Overnight Brightening Boost Facial - $75; formulated to infuse potent brightening and moisturizing ingredients back into laser treated skin (both Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid help with this)

As with any device, it is extremely important that you thoroghly read the manual before using. Tria also requires you to sign-up your ADL via your email address, and by entering in your device's serial number. Once you move onto the actual treatment process, you will quickly learn how to use it (horizontal motion) and for how long, as each setting is different. I'm still currently on level 1, but hope to move up to level 2 soon. The suggested treatment course is eight weeks on, and then four weeks off. I'll be sure to post an update at the 8 week mark.

The Tria Age-Defying Laser retails for $569,  and all of the Tria Beauty Age-Defying Products can be found at their website,

So there you have it - two incredible new devices on the market that help to target the top two skincare concerns. Let me know if you have any further questions, or if you end up giving them a try!

**please note, all of the above thoughts expressed are my own and is not to replace the recommendations of a doctor.

Ulta Haul

So I'm back from my sunny San Francisco adventure, and I truthfully cannot make a trip to the States without some time spent at Ulta Beauty. I love Ulta for many reasons, but especially because it's like a drugstore and Sephora blended into one! I think it's important to be able to see both sides of makeup together, so you can swatch in one department, and find a dupe, if you'd like, in the other (makes my life easier!). They also always seem to offer tons of gift with purchases *my favourite* My first trip there was a quick-ish one, as it's not an ideal place to bring your 5 year old son, but I did manage to get some cool products before my time was up!

Kinda hard to see everything in this pic, so I will go one by one and let you know what I think about them all :) Most are available in Canada anyways, but I will be noting US pricing.

Starting from left to right:

Tarte "Lights, Camera, Lashes" 4 -in-1 Mascara - it was the "Deal of the Day", so it was $10USD...nearly fainted! I often talk about my love affair with Maybelline mascara, but when given the opportunity to purchase a prestige brand at this pricing, why not?? I had originally tried this mascara a couple of years ago in a deluxe Sephora sample pack, and I really did love it. Made my lashes thick and full, but not tons of length. Overall a nice, volumizing mascara, and not clumpy (I actually used the Sephora coupon enclosed in the sample box and redeemed for this mascara). One thing, I dislike the packaging - it has got a weird snake-skin, stitched pleather exterior; a little gimmicky and not a fan of that.

L'Oreal Infallible Lacquer Liner 24H - $9.99, (buy one, get one half price) - So naturally I bought two! I love cream liners and use them on nearly every single client. I love the black, as it's a lot deeper and richer in colour than a lot of department store brands, and it lasts...oh boy, does it last! I always make sure to have a few "Bronze" on hand as well, as I use those most often as a base for my smokey eye looks.

Kardashian Beauty Dry Shampoo - $13.29USD - Admittedly, I am NOT a Kardashian fan, but they do have great hair, right?? (except for that current platinum horror show) Sigh... I love dry shampoos, I have tried so many. But this one didn't do much for my hair, didn't 'revive it's style' like it claimed, and didn't seem to put any texture into my hair. The nozzle on it didn't allow for it to be sprayed easily at my roots (the spray was too 'wide'). And the smell - ack! It was way to strong - back to the store, it went.

NYX V'Amped Up Lip Top Coat - $6.99USD - so essentially this is a glossy black chubby lip pencil. If you wear it alone (who would?? I mean matte black, yes), but this is a bit patchy. It is intended to be able to "vamp" up some of your existing lip colours. Cool pinks turn to deeper cooler, mauve tones, cool reds into vampy, burgundy reds. It's actually pretty neat and can change a lot of your colours with only one product. I did try with a neutral pink/brown colour, and it did look a bit like mud, so don't do that lol... but a kinda cool product for less than $7. Here's an example of what it does:

V'amped Up

L to R : MAC Powerhouse (top, alone; bottom with V'amped Up Lip Top Coat)

MAC Viva Glam Gaga (top, alone; bottom with)

NYX V'amped Up Lip Top Coat - alone

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion - it was "Deal of the Day" the next day, so at $10USD I bought another! You can read all about it here on one of my previous posts. LOVE IT.

NYX Butter Gloss - $4.99USD (buy one get one half price) - this is my FAVE gloss at the moment. Love the non-sticky texture, the medium coverage, the scent, the wearability. It reminds me a lot of MAC Cremesheen glass. Some interesting info: MAC's Cremesheen Glass is listed at $23 for 0.09 US fl oz; NYX Butter Gloss is $4.99USD (or $7.99CAD at Rexall) for 0.23 oz. That's wild - 1/3 of the price for most than twice as much?? NYX all the way!

So there you have it - a fairly tame #UltaHaul visit for me, but still was able to pick up a few of my favourites. With the dollar exchange being so rotten right now, it's probably not a bad thing to scale back a bit!

** At the time of this posting, only the Dry Shampoo was not available in Canada...NBD.

CTV Morning Live - Makeup Spring Cleaning

Always wonder how long those shadows *really* are good for? Bought a new mascara a few months ago, but have only used it twice? Check out my segment on CTV Morning Live today as I talk to Lianne Laing and Melissa Lamb about expiration dates and when to purge your endless supply of makeup (yes, you have to…). Watch the video: CTV Morning Live -Makeup Spring Cleaning

Here's a handy list of how long products are good for, once they've been opened.

I mention "up to" as there are certain circumstances in which products may last shorter or slightly longer periods of time. If you've noticed that your products smells "off", or that powder you've been using for a while has a weird film across it, it's time to pitch it - no matter what the timeframe.  Cosmetics, especially liquid and emollient based, are an incredible breeding ground for bacteria - it can grow at an exponential rate and can lead to irritation, infections and even allergic reactions.

Most products are still not required to have an expiry date, but generally speaking, most products have a shelf stable life of 30-36 months (meaning, from production date, unopened). Here is a link to a super website called - it allows you to check out the batch code from your products, and tells you when it was made. The slight nerd in me finds this super interesting!  I have to admit, when I first stumbled across this site, I grabbed all of my makeup that was nearby and rung it through… aaaaaaaand then half of it hit the trash can! It's hard to keep track of what was purchased when, I hear that, says the makeup hoarder…

Another area that we don't tend to think about is the cleanliness of our makeup. We wash our clothes, our hair, our faces and bodies - but we never really think about how clean our makeup is. Imagine - it's the *only* thing we put on our bodies that we never wash ::shudder:: And really, I wouldn't use a dirty washcloth on my face, so why is makeup any different? There is a revolutionary product out on the market called Beauty So Clean, that was created by a top celebrity makeup artist in Toronto. Helps to keep your makeup & brushes sanitary and it's Canadian made? I like! They offer a few different products, including:

Conditioning Brush Cleanser - for cleaning your brushes,

keeping them fresh & conditioned

Cosmetic Sanitizer Wipes - for lipsticks, lipglosses & mascaras

Cosmetic Sanitizer Mists - for powders, without ruining their finish

This link here shows all about bacteria and your makeup. I feel like I should say sorry and you're welcome in the same sentence here :D   If you'd like to try any Beauty So Clean products, use the promo code "beachparty" for an additional savings off of regular priced items at checkout.

So now that the spring finally seems to be trying to arrive, it's the perfect time to go through your makeup bags, add in some fresh new colours and products, clean up what you're keeping turf those older ones that have been kicking around for a little too long

Eyes On MAC - Eyeshadow x 9

On Wednesday night at the Nordstrom Ottawa Gala, I spotted something in their *incredible* makeup department… these itty bitty, beautiful little palettes from MAC! But wait - what are these? I've only ever seen the full sized, 15x palettes! These were out for a sneak peak at the Gala, and officially launched in all stores the next day. So naturally, I popped into MAC on Thursday morning to pick them up ;) ES x 9 At first look, I didn't know which to grab - they come in Amber, Burgundy, Purple & Navy. And at $48CAD each, I should have gotten them all! But, for practicality sake, whether they end up in my kit or for personal use, I ended up with both the Burgundy and Amber palettes, and I must say --- I LOVE THEM! This is the first time in a long time where I've looked at a palette and thought all the colours were very well thought out. Finally, a company comes out with a nice and balanced grouping of colours, regarding both shades and textures.

Here's Burgundy Times Nine palette, listed below are the colours, textures and whether or not they are re-promotes (RP - in the existing line) or limited edition (LE): burgundy open

  • Top row : Honey Lust, lustre - RP; Poppyseed, satin -LE; Quarry, matte - RP
  • Middle row : Antiqued, veluxe pearl - RP; Embark, matte - RP; #Noir, velvet - LE
  • Bottom row : Haux, satin - RP; Star Violet, veluxe pearl - RP; Sketch, velvet - RP

So all in all, there are 7 re-promotes and 2 new colours. The re-promoted colours they've selected, I actually use most often, so I would plough through them in my kit. In that case, this one is a keeper for me, myself and I.

And now here's a look at Amber Times Nine:

  • Top row : Cozy Grey, matte - LE; Kitties, frost - LE; Georgia Peach, matte - LE
  • Middle row : Ricepaper, frost - RP; Creative Copper, lustre - LE; Cork, satin - RP
  • Bottom row : Don't Tell, lustre - RP; Aromatic, matte - LE; Pepper, Please, velvet - LE

In this palette, there are only 2 re-promotes, and the other 7 are brand new! I must say, I adore the top three shades and my only concern, with regards to putting them in my kit, is that I will go through them so quickly. I think the top row of shades are keepers for sure - umm, can we keep those in the permanent line, please?!

Pricing : At $48 CAD, the price point of these sets are quite reasonable, and can rival their competitor, Urban Decay, in the palette world. And if you're an industry professional, and have your PRO card, these are discountable - WIN!

MAC Eyeshadow x 9 = 0.8g each = states the value is $63.00CAD

Urban Decay Naked 2 palette - 12 colours = 1.3g each = retails for $64.00CAD

For the value/colour selection/pigment payoff/finish, I do prefer the MAC palettes, as I find the Urban Decay Naked palettes (not Naked Basics) have too many frosted and glitzy textures in them. If you're looking for great bang for your buck, and be able to sample a bunch of colours, the MAC palettes are fantastic. Picking up these two palettes has allowed me to spring clean my own makeup bag, and start the upcoming season with a fresh new outlook with my own makeup!

CTV Morning Live : Brow Trends for 2015

Watch the video:

I was absolutely thrilled when CTV Morning Live contacted me to come and do a segment on brow trends for 2015! Brows are such an important feature – often forgotten and now finally getting some air-time like they deserve ;)

For 2015, there’s a few trends to take note of. First, the more bushy, natural brow, and Cara Delevingne is a great example of that. Secondly, we spoke about the more structured brow – the Kardashian sisters represent this trend well. It’s not the blocky and overdrawn brow we’ve seen in season’s past (I blame Instagram for that!), but a slightly softer approach.

Here’s a list of the products I used:

MAC Eye Brows in Lingering –, $19; a nice, firm self-sharpening pencil that allows you to create realistic, hair-like strokes. Tip – the pencil only winds up, doesn’t wind down. Only twist a little at a time.

Maybelline Brow Drama in Soft Brown – Wal-Mart, $ 10; a great product to tame wild and unruly brows, make them lay flat for a sleek look, or fluff upwards for a fuller look. I like to go one shade lighter than the actual brow, especially if my hair is lighter, has highlights etc.

Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow in Dark Brown - Sephora, $23; a revolutionary waterproof pomade used to define brows. For best results, I like using the MAC Cosmetics #208 Angle Brow Brush.
